On Saturday, November 1, 2008, from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m., The Cleveland Weed and Seed Coalition will host the 2008 Family Empowerment Conference at Cuyahoga Community College Metro Campus.

The theme of this year’s conference is “Saving our Families, By Any Means Necessary”. The focus of the conference is threefold: (1) Decreasing high school dropout rates, (2) Reducing juvenile violence through Intervention and Prevention programs, and (3) increasing family’s awareness to services and resources.

The Weed and Seed Initiative is a five-year strategy to “weed out crime and drug trafficking in Weed & Seed target neighborhoods, and then to “seed” that area with programs for youth, families, and seniors. By working with various local agencies that range from Federal, State, and local government entities, in addition to private business, organization and community groups, we are making a difference throughout the city of Cleveland and across the nation.

Radio host Basheer Jones of 1490 AM will be the featured speaker, other invited quest include: Mayor Frank Jackson, Cleveland City Council Members, Director and Assistant Director of the Community Capacity Development Office, and various other state and federal officials.

The conference begins at 9:00 a.m. with registration. Opening session begins at 10:00 a.m. From 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., conference participants can attend various workshops focusing on conference topics; finally, a resource fair, with over 50 organizations from throughout the city will be offered where attendees can sign-up for various programs and services

Drawings for a chance to win Gas Cards, Gift Cards, Computers, along with various other prizes will be held at the end of the conference. Refreshments will be served.
