Black History Live – Living History Award

Call for Nominations

Do you know of a resident of Cleveland’s Central, Garden Valley, or Kinsman-Union neighborhoods of any age who deserves recognition for their leadership and commitment to the community?  Help us honor this person by nominating them for the 2010 Living History Award presented by Burten, Bell, Carr, Development, Inc. and Ward 5 Councilwoman Phyllis Cleveland.

The purpose of the Living History Award is to honor individuals currently making history in our community just as we celebrate those who made history in the past.  This award will be presented in front of over 300 youth to show them that history is being made in the present and in their community not just what they read in a history book.  Previous honorees include a broad range of history makers from Judge Jean Murrell Capers who was the first African American woman to be appointed to the City of Cleveland’s Law Department Prosecutor’s Office in 1946 to 16-year-old Earlaina Kemp who was the first high school student in Cleveland to win the national Scenarios USA Script and Story Writing Contest for her story, “MANchild” in 2008.

Criteria

A Living History Honoree is someone who demonstrates the following characteristics:

  • Lives in Ward 5;
  • Has made a significant contribution or historical achievement;
  • Individual of any age;
  • Someone youth can relate to and be inspired by.

 Submission Criteria

Nominators are to submit a brief description and/or resume along with the contact information of the nominee.  The description should illustrate how the person meets the criteria listed above.   Nominations are due no later than 4:00 pm on Monday, February 1, 2010 to: Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc. 7201 Kinsman Road, Suite 104 Cleveland, OH 44104 (postal mail), 216.341.2683 (fax), smullins@bbcdevelopment.org (email).  If you have any questions, please contact Sherita Mullins, Program Manager at 216.341.1455.

Started in 2006, Black History Live is an annual event hosted by Burten, Bell, Carr Development, Inc. to present youth and their parents of the Central, Kinsman-Union, and Garden Valley neighborhoods with a cultural heritage performance and award presentation of a community leader to celebrate Black History.
