Tree Stewardship Training

Come to CornUcopia Place, 7201 Kinsman Rd. Ste. 103B Cleveland, OH 44104, Wednesday July 27 and Thursday July 28 for Part I and II of a 4 part tree stewardship training.

Join Arborists from Western Reserve Land Conservancy and Holden Arboretum to learn about urban and community forestry and volunteerism at the neighborhood level. Training includes tree biology and identification, pruning, planting, root and soil care, urban tree stress, community planning and needs, and service learning opportunities.

OSU Extension will offer training programs in the winter of 2015 in community gardening and market gardening. Come to an Information Session to learn more about these Training Programs:

Description of Training Programs:
Community Gardening
In this eight week training program, participants will learn how to:

  • Locate and assess a good garden site
  • Organize a group of gardeners
  • Plan and design a garden space
  • Identify community resources
  • Access materials for their project
  • Increase neighborhood access to fresh produce
  • * Classes will meet Thursday evenings starting January 29, 2015.

Market Gardening
In this twelve week training program, participants will learn how to:

  • Develop a small business or agriculture based enterprise
  • Grow produce using techniques that create higher yields
  • Bring healthy produce to local markets in urban neighborhoods
  • Be part of Cuyahoga County’s emerging local food market
  • * Classes will meet Tuesday evenings starting January 27, 2015

Race, Food and Justice Conference!

Environmental Health Watch, in collaboration with Rid-All Green Partnership and Case Western Reserve University Social Justice Institute, will come together again for:

Race, Food & Justice Conference 2014: Analyzing the Urban Food Movement through a Social Justice Lens. 

The two-day conference will be held on April 4th-5th, 2014 at Case Western Reserve University.

Friday April 4th, 6:00p.m.-9:00p.m. at Case Western Reserve University Allen Memorial Library located at 11000 Euclid Ave and Adelbert Rd. Doors open at 5p.m. and refreshments will be served. FREE street metered parking available after 6, pay parking garages available on Adelbert Rd., Ford Dr. and East Blvd. Speakers include Dr. Monica White , Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and Dara Cooper, Director NYC Food and Fitness Partnership.

 

Saturday April 5th, 9:30a.m.-2:30p.m. at University Circle United Methodist Church located at 1919 E. 107th and Chester Avenue. Doors open at 9a.m. with a continental breakfast and lunch provided. Speakers include Mistinguette Smith of the Black Land Project, Malik Yakini of Detroit Black Community Food Security Network and Jonathan Ferrer of United Puerto Rican Organization of Sunset Park. On Saturday, FREE parking at Judson Manor on E. 107th, Pentecostal Church on 105th/Chester and on MLK Blvd.

Want to Start a Community Garden in Cleveland?

Summer Sprout is Cleveland’s Community Gardening Program. There are currently 175 active gardens in the program. Gardeners are able to grow nutritious food in their neighborhoods, at their churches, or places of work. If you know of a potential new garden site, or belong to an existing garden that is not currently enrolled in Summer Sprout, feel free to contact Jim Thompson at OSU Extension for more information and an application.

The Summer Sprout Program is supported by the City of Cleveland Department of Community Development and managed by Ohio State University Extension, Cuyahoga County. City of Cleveland residents and stakeholders are eligible to apply for the Sum-mer Sprout Program. Only garden sites in the City of Cleveland who fill out complete applications will be considered.

The Summer Mural Institute has been providing job training and leadership development to youth in Cleveland neighborhoods while creating large scale  public murals.

 Come visit  Artists in Residence Ted Kurtz and Danny Carver, who  have made murals for the Larchmere and Detroit Shoreway Neighborhood.
