Here are a few notes about what’s happening with BBC’s staff:

Larry LaPrade works the grill at the Model Block Housing Fair

Larry LaPrade, who served as an Americorps VISTA volunteer with BBC for the last two years, ended his service in early October.  Acknowledging the hard work that he has done in his tenure, Larry was welcomed back in a role as part-time code enforcement officer.  In this position, Larry will survey neighborhoods served by BBC and work with property owners to correct code violations.  He is also charged with working with real estate development staff to implement a code enforcement program completely new to the organization.  This fall, he started coursework towards his Master of Urban Planning, Design, and Development at Cleveland State University.

Akanni Thomas completed her term as an Americorps VISTA volunteer last Friday.  She effectively performed community organizing, created a volunteer management and recruitment program, and was a critical part of a team that successfully pursued and coordinated a KaBOOM! playground in Central this summer.  She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State University in Black Studies and is a recent graduate of the Neighborhood Leadership Development Program.  BBC is greatly appreciative of the many talents Akanni shared and contributions she made to the organization over the last two years.

Kayla Hodges BBC’s new high school intern, began working with us in mid-October.  Kayla is a resident of the Villages of Central.  She is a volunteer at Lonnie Burten Recreation Center and is also a member of the East Tech Transformation committee.

Emily Wheeler, BBC's new Americorps VISTA

And last but not least, the newest addition to BBC’s staff is Emily Wheeler.  She is joining us as an Americorps VISTA volunteer via the Ohio CDC Association.  Emily, a Northeast Ohio native, received her Bachelor of Arts in government from Skidmore College in New York, and has previously worked in a variety of government-related roles in Washington, D.C.  Her goal for her experience at BBC is to learn as much as possible about community development, as well as help improve and assist the residents of the neighborhoods the agency serves.  If you see Emily working in the BBC office or out in the community, please welcome her.
