BBC Hosts East Tech Transition Youth Leadership Training

Monday, May 17th, 2010

May 12, 2010 Cleveland, OH – Public perception is a contributing factor in how children interpret circumstances.  Being equipped with useful information and keeping a cool head might prevent emotional reactions from escalating into unnecessary injuries or casualties.

The Cleveland Central Weed & Seed will sponsor a Youth Leadership Training” with students from the 3 High Schools that will be merging this fall (East High, South High, & East Tech). Each school will send 10-15 students that will be attending East Technical High School next fall to discuss ways to incorporate a smooth transition of students from various neighborhoods and communities.

The two-day leadership training will be conducted by Consultants with Neighborworks America. The Cleveland Central Weed and Seed Site was one of four Weed and Seed Sites selected nationwide to participate in this specialized training. The training will take place at the Carl Stokes U.S. Federal Courthouse on Tuesday May 18, and Wednesday May 19, 2010 from 9am-2pm.

The Cleveland Central Weed and Seed Initiative is a five-year strategy to “Weed” out crime and drug trafficking in our target area of the Cleveland Central Neighborhood, and then to “Seed” that area with programs for youth, families, and seniors. We have partnered with Federal, State and Local agencies, private organizations, businesses, and community groups, and we will make a difference!

We became an official Weed and Seed site on June 1, 2004, and our programming started in December of 2003. Our Steering Committee was awarded its first implementation grant from the Department of Justice in June of 2005.

The Target area east/west border is Cedar to Quincy Avenue, with E. 55th and E. 79th serving as our North & South Borders. With us serving approximately 1700 residents, the Weed & Seed Initiative had a positive impact on residents and businesses in the target area reducing crime, drug distribution, and prostitution, while increasing programming for youth, establishment of a neighborhood computer lab, and demolishing of abandon and vacant property.
